Coastal Town and Norine Braun collaborate to remember Tina Fontaine and raise funds for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls with new single “Ward of the State“.

Canada – Sept 27, 2024 – Vancouver indie pop band Coastal Town and celebrated Canadian singer-songwriter Norine Braun have collaborated to write a charity single in honour of Tina Fontaine. Marking ten years since the passing of Tina Fontaine, the song seeks to tell her story in a way that is both honest and respectful. The chorus “Am I Next” acknowledges the #aminext social media campaign that arose in the aftermath of Tina’s passing and is an anthem for those who are still seeking change.

Norine’s vocals are rich and powerful, bringing the soulfulness and longing that the song needed. Coastal Town, known for sweeter guitar tones, went a bit grittier with this song to highlight the tension of the story. The most powerful section of the song is the bridge where you can just make out Norine telling a little bit of Tina’s story, while the guitars build to the final chorus. With the single release scheduled for Sept 27, 2024, Coastal Town and Norine Braun invited audiences to listen and remember Tina Fontaine. All proceeds from the single will be donated to charities in Tina’s name and we invite anyone moved by her story to make a donation as well.

“The area beside the Assiniboine River is where many would meet up to camp before the buffalo hunts and then later return with their Red River Carts filled for winter. Standing by the river I closed my eyes toward the sun I could feel the ancestors. After a lifetime of wondering where and who I came from I found them. STORY BEHIND THE SONG

“Ascending Lullaby is a song about my Mother’s passing and is symbolic for the transitioning from one life to another. My Mother deeply loved birds she had a bird bath in her front yard that she faithfully cleaned everyday and would sit in her swivel rocking chair and watch the birds come and go, drink and bathe. These sightings were often the focus of our phone conversations in her elder years.”
